Holiday school fundraising is coming to a close, and now it is time to look ahead. A new year, a new school term, a new school year, and finally, the next holiday fundraiser. While counting your profits and setting up your budget after this holiday fair, it is important to be prepared for the next one. Your school can always use the extra funds, but how do you want to expand your fundraising to be more effective next year?
Since the 1950’s there has been a method of setting goals that has become a common practice for fundraising. It is called the SMART method. SMART is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-Based. Setting goals by using the SMART method can make your holiday fundraising goals more focused.
Specific – Your fundraising goal should be direct and to the point. Set the goal that You feel is right, based on this year’s earnings, as well as what you need for the future.
Measurable – Measuring your goals and funds is a big part of specifics, but it can help make a goal more concrete. How much do you have to raise? How much did you raise last year? How many fundraising events will you do?
Attainable – Your goals should be reasonable to reach, but they should also be ambitious. Shoot for a higher mark each year, but set it within the realms of possibility.
Relevant – Why is the fundraising necessary? What are you aiming to use the money for? Writing down and discussing what the fundraising is for can help set goals and how each step of your fundraising brings you closer to those new textbooks or classroom laptops.
Time-Based – Management of a successful fundraiser relies heavily on time. You need time to plan, get approval, get the word out, get volunteers, set-up, and have the event. Time management is vital for the fundraising process.
